| Complex Plumbing System Found Deep Beneath West Antarctic Ice Sheet
The recent discovery of a subglacial water system beneath the West Antarctic ice sheet is
causing scientists to rethink the mechanisms that control the flow of ice streams
into the Ross Ice Shelf and ultimately into the Southern Ocean, according to Helen Amanda
Fricker, a glaciologist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego.

Seven at UC San Diego Receive Stem Cell Funding from California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
More than two years after voters approved a $3 billion
program to fund stem cell research in California, the
state has approved the first grants focused solely on
human embryonic stem cell research. Seven of those
grants, totaling almost $4.4 million, have been
awarded to researchers at UCSD.

hairdryer. Take shorter, cooler showers.
Unplug all appliances that aren’t in use. Thousands of students at Revelle, Muir and Sixth colleges
are trying to live by these rules for a month, while vying to win UCSD’s Green Campus energy conservation
contest. The competition ends March 5.

Seniors to Watch: Santina Watts
From the time she was “about five,” Santina Watts knew what
she wanted to be when she grew up: an engineer.
Santina and her mother were on a tour of Hearst Castle when, her mother recalls, the pre-schooler became entranced with
the estate’s magnificent showplace, “Casa Grande,” with its imposing towers, and the three guesthouses
of Mediterranean Revival style.

The number of heart transplants being performed across the nation is

Renowned Parkinson's Disease Researcher Dies
Dr. Clifford W. Shults, professor of neurosciences at the UCSD School of Medicine
and neurologist at the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System died
of complications of cancer on February 7. Shults was 56.

Student Wins Sweepstakes from Estancia Hotel
Third-year UCSD student Tara Townsend prevailed over
thousands of entrants recently in a back-to-school sweepstakes, sponsored by Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa and
designed to give one student the “tools for success.” Townsend, a psychology
and linguistics double major, won a prize package valued at more than $3,500,
including a Dell Inspiron laptop, a Microsoft Office software package, a Dell
inkjet printer, an iPod Nano and a $500 Office Depot gift card. Estancia General
Manager Giuseppe Lama presented Townsend with her prizes Feb. 1 at the hotel.
