By winning its final two regular season contests last weekend, the women’s basketball team captured its first-ever conference title. And, for the first time since March of 2000, when it was still a Division III institution, UCSD will be hosting post-season women’s basketball. Making its second straight NCAA appearance, this one as the top-seeded team, Coach Janell Jones’ Tritons will welcome seven opponents to RIMAC Arena for the 2007 NCAA Division II West Regional, starting Friday with semi-finals Saturday and the championship game Monday night.
The Tritons made their conference crown official
with an 83-61 trouncing of San Francisco State Saturday
night. Leora Juster was her usual dominating self,
pouring in 27 points to go with seven rebounds and
seven assists. Meaghan Noud matched her 15 markers
from the previous evening and Hillary Hansen scored
eight points while grabbing 10 boards. UCSD was up
seven at the break and raised the margin to 32 before
Coach Jones cleared the bench. Eleven players hit
the scoring column. It was the final regular season
home game for four seniors—Juster, Hansen, Kacie
Kostlan and Meagan McGovern.
