Between Sleep Disruption and Increased
Cardiovascular Risk in Healthy Men and Women
Researchers at the School of Medicine have
discovered that sleep disruption in seemingly healthy
subjects is associated with increased clotting of
the blood, which has previously been shown to predict
cardiovascular disease. The findings were published
in the March issue of CHEST, the official
publication of the American College of Chest Physicians.

Electrical Engineers Building New Kind of Image Search Engine
A Google image search for “tiger” yields many tiger photos – but also returns
images of a tiger pear cactus stuck in a tire, a racecar, Tiger Woods, the
boxer Dick Tiger, Antarctica, and many others. Why? Today’s large Internet
search engines look for images using captions or other text linked to images
rather than looking at what is actually in the picture.

Artist and Dog-wrangler Wins UCSD Playwriting Competition
Kato McNickle, a playwright, artist and dog-wrangler, is the
winner of the 2007 Baldwin New Play Festival Playwriting Competition.
Her play “In Search of a Better Life With Elvis,” follows the journey
of an African-American girl who needs to understand and forgive her father,
an Elvis impersonator. In the play, the girl, Jezzy, hears a voice saying
“Memphis” so she heads off to Tennnessee. But the voice meant Memphis, Egypt.

Scripps Oceanography Professor Honored for Antarctic Field Research
New York City’s Explorers Club, a century-old international professional society, has awarded Gerald Kooyman of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego its highest honor for accomplishments in polar field research. Kooyman, a professor emeritus of biology and research physiology, is a distinguished scientist who has conducted research on marine birds and mammals for 45 years.
