They and seven others will be recognized as Exemplary Staff Employees of the Year Monday afternoon at the UCSD Faculty Club. The Exemplary Staff Employee of the Year Review Committee, which includes representatives from the Chancellor's Office, each vice chancellor area and the UCSD Medical Center, evaluated all eligible nominations submitted by members of the campus community and came up with this year’s 10 award recipients.
David Harders, a development technician in respiratory care at the UCSD Medical Center, will receive this year’s Principal Exemplary Staff Employee of the Year award.
Harders is the ultimate handyman, judging by his nomination.
His skills have saved the medical center at least
$60,000 annually. For example, he saved $40,000 over
five years by figuring out a cheap and effective way
to clean ventilator sensors. He also often helps colleagues
in need. When an employee was having trouble with
her car battery while her husband was sick, Harders
bought a new battery for her, installed it and refused
to let her pay him back. He also made repairs and
moved colleagues for free. This year, he bought a
miniature kitchen for a family with five children
that his department adopted. He put it together and
painted it pink, white and blue. The family’s
youngest children, ages 5, 4 and 3, gazed in amazement
at their new toys.
Philip Panzarella, who also works in respiratory
care, also will be recognized Monday. He’ flew
to Cambodia with a team of nurses and physicians to
treat children with life-threatening holes in their
hearts. Maria Cordileone, who works in rehabilitation
services at the UCSD Medical Center, also will receive
an award. Her son was injured in Iraq. While he was
treated at Walter Reed, Cordileone reached out to
other patients and their families. She is now part
of the Adopt a Soldier Program, which works with the
American Red Cross and Walter Reed to provide injured
soldiers with clothing, books, electronics and more.
Mary L. Brown, who works in Academic Affairs, also
will be recognized. She’ volunteers at Rachel
House, an organization that supports homeless and
battered women.
