School Grad Takes on New Role
as UCSD Associated Students President
Marco Murillo grew up in San Ysidro, the youngest
son of a single mother who didn’t finish elementary
school. Fast forward two decades and Murillo is now
UCSD’s Associated Students president and a political
science and history major who plans to go to law school.
Much has happened during the past 20 years in Murillo’s
life, but he credits The Preuss School and UCSD for
nudging him in a new direction. More

| Campus Celebrates New Student Services Center
“One, two, three!” About 300 voices counted down and cheered as students unfurled a banner welcoming everyone to the dedication of UCSD’s new Student Services Center. Then 500 blue and gold balloons flew up into the sunny Friday afternoon sky.

Standout Staff to Be Recognized as Employees
of Year
One
recently traveled to Cambodia to help perform heart
surgery on 15 children. Another puts together care
packages for wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army
Medical Center, where her son was treated after a
bomb blast in Iraq. Another provides meals and emotional
support for homeless and battered women. They and
seven others will be recognized as Exemplary Staff
Employees of the Year this afternoon at the Faculty
Club. More

Gift to UC San Diego to Establish University Librarianship—A First for San Diego County
Thanks
to a one million dollar gift from longtime university
friend and supporter, Audrey S. Geisel, UC San Diego
will establish the Audrey Geisel University Librarianship,
the first holder of which will be UCSD’s chief
librarian, Brian E. C. Schottlaender. The librarianship
represents the first of its kind in San Diego County,
and one of only a few such university positions on

| Barbara Sawrey Named Associate
Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education
Barbara Sawrey has been named Associate Vice
Chancellor for Undergraduate Education effective July
1, 2007. Sawrey has been a member of the department
of chemistry and biochemistry since 1984. She holds
an appointment as a senior lecturer with Security
of Employment and has served as the department's Vice
Chair for Education since 1994. Her research in chemical
education focuses on understanding the development
of student learning of complex scientific processes
and concepts. More

| Nobel Prize Winner Speaks at Inaugural Rady School Finance Conference
The Rady School held its inaugural Finance Conference on May 9, with speakers from academia, government and indusry. The Finance Conference will take place every other year and this year the theme was “managing and modeling risk.” Some of the nation’s leading authorities on credit risk partnered with the Rady School to speak at the conference.
