The Rady School held its inaugural Finance Conference on May 9, with speakers from academia, government and indusry. The Finance Conference will take place every other year and this year the theme was “managing and modeling risk.” Some of the nation’s leading authorities on credit risk partnered with the Rady School to speak at the conference, including Nobel Prize winner and New York University Professor Robert Engle, Robin L. Lumsdaine, associate director of the Division of Banking Supervision and Regulation at the Federal Reserve Board and Andreas Gottschling, managing director of risk and capital management for Deutsche Bank AG.

“The Rady School is pleased with the caliber of speakers we were able to attract for our first-ever Finance Conference,” said Rady School Dean Robert S. Sullivan. “Bringing some of the most well-respected professionals in the field of credit risk to the school is a true benefit to our students, the campus and the business community.”

As the first Federal Reserve official to speak at the Rady School, Lumsdaine discussed Basel II, a recommendation on banking laws and regulations that the Federal Reserve is charged with implementing in the United States. Gottschling, a UC San Diego alumnus, provided an overview of the risk modeling process used at Deutsche Bank and outlined modeling challenges for a large global investment bank. Engle also discussed financial modeling, presenting several new approaches to conference attendees.

Academic papers were presented in the afternoon by Professor Philippe Jorion from UC Irvine, Professor Pierre Collin-Dufresne, from UC Berkeley and Professor Eric Ghysels from the University of North Carolina.

The crowd for this event filled the room and attendees included Rady MBA students, Rady School and University of California faculty and guests from the financial services community in Southern California.
