the junkyard, also known as Parking Lot 705, where
29 teams put together boxcars they hoped would win
the Triton Junkyard Derby last week. Building a boxcar
that can make it down Peterson Hill without falling
apart is trickier than you might think. Making the
speediest boxcar is entirely another matter.

| UC San Diego Selected to Design, Build Cyberinfrastructure for Ocean Observatories
What we know about the world’s oceans comes
largely from
ship-based scientists taking samples and making measurements
at periodic intervals. Now researchers led by Scripps
Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego will create
a blueprint for digital infrastructure that will allow
ocean observatories to collect, process and transmit
data 24 hours a day, seven days a week. More

One fixes life-saving equipment at the UCSD Medical Center. Another helps the center’s rehabilitation services run smoothly while collecting donations for soldiers wounded in Iraq. Another advocates for organ donation. They and seven others were recognized last Monday as Exemplary Staff Employees of the Year at the UCSD Faculty Club.

Regents Approve Plan for New UCSD Inpatient Bed Tower
The
UC Board of Regents on May 18 voted to approve UC
San Diego’s request to move forward with planning
a new inpatient bed tower on the East Campus medical
complex. The proposed project would build 125-150
new beds as an extension of the current 119-bed facility.

Track and Field Coach and Standout Athlete Honored
Head coach Tony Salerno and junior standout Whitney Johnson were honored Monday by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association for their efforts thus far in 2007. For the third-straight year, Salerno was honored as the West Region Women’s Coach of the Year while Johnson was named the women’s Field Athlete of the Year.

TeacherTECH Program Receives Education Award
SDSC TeacherTECH, which helps educators bring new technology tools and technology-enabled science concepts
into K-12 curriculum, has been presented with a Partner of the Year Award by the San Diego Science Alliance.
The outreach program, run by the San Diego Supercomputer Center at UC San Diego, attracted more than 1,200 teachers from more than 150 area schools to its workshops in 2006, and anticipates some 1,400 participants in 2007. More |
