Projects for Social Architectures Class Aim to Boost Interactions on Campus
Ioana Patringenaru | June 11, 2007
A maze made up of plastic sheets invited students to explore. Nine tree and tire swings sprinkled throughout campus invited them to play. Informal drum circles invited them to communicate. These are some of the projects students put together for a Social Architectures class this quarter at UCSD.
The course examined how structures and architecture impact social interactions. Students then designed interventions that would encourage people to interact. Perhaps the most visible was a labyrinth set up behind the Faculty Club last week. Plastic sheets wrapped around trees created 25 different “rooms.” The space functioned as an art gallery, a venue for concerts and a video editing studio.
