What’s new this academic year? This Week@UCSD has been looking at all the changes taking place on campus in 2007-08. Here is a short list of new appointments, transfers and promotions announced since the beginning of the year for key administrative and academic positions.

| Dr. Penny Rue |
|
Dr. Penny Rue, a creative educator and champion of students, has been appointed as vice chancellor for Student Affairs at UCSD. The UC Board of Regents approved Rue’s appointment, effective Sept. 10. Rue, 54, comes from the University of Virginia, where she had served as dean of students since 1999. More

| Dr. David Brenner |
|
Dr. David Brenner, a distinguished physician-scientist who began his academic career at UCSD, was appointed by the UC Regents to be vice chancellor for health sciences and dean of the School of Medicine at UCSD, effective Feb. 1. Before coming to campus, Brenner, 53, was Samuel Bard professor and chair of the department of medicine at Columbia University Medical Center, College of Physicians and Surgeons, and physician-in-chief of New York Presbyterian Hospital/ Columbia. | Paul W. Drake |
|
Paul W. Drake, dean of the division of social sciences for the past 12 years and a member of UCSD faculty since 1984, has been appointed as the campus’ new senior vice chancellor for Academic Affairs. In his new role, Drake succeeds Marsha Chandler, who stepped down from the senior vice chancellor position in June 2007. More

Gary Matthews has been serving as interim vice chancellor - resource management & planning since John Woods' retirement on Dec. 31. Matthews has provided leadership in business affairs as assistant vice chancellor, auxiliary and plant services, since February 2002. More

| Wayne Kennedy |
|
Wayne Kennedy was appointed as interim vice chancellor for external relations effective May 1. Kennedy, formerly University of California’s senior vice president of business and finance, will have responsibility for leading the process of attracting private financial support to the university, strengthening UCSD’s relationships with alumni and other supporters and building UCSD’s reputation in the region and beyond. | Steve A. Kay |

Steve A. Kay, a pioneer in the biology of circadian rhythms at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, has been named dean of the division of biological sciences at UC San Diego. He assumed his new administrative position Sept. 17, replacing Suresh Subramani, a professor of biological sciences who served as interim dean during the past year and Eduardo Macagno, who was the founding dean of the division from 2001 to 2006. | Eric Van Young |
|
Eric Van Young, professor in the department of history, has agreed to serve as interim dean of the division of arts and humanities effective July 1. Van Young has been on the faculty of UCSD since 1982. He replaces Michael Bernstein, who became provost at Tulane University in New Orleans. More

| Gabriele Wienhausen |
|
After seven years of service as provost of Sixth College, Gabriele Wienhausen stepped down from her position effective Aug. 31 to accept a full-time administrative position as associate dean for education in the division of biological sciences beginning Sept. 1. In addition to her position as provost, Wienhausen has held an appointment as a senior lecturer with security of employment in the division of biological sciences since 1993. More

| Barbara Sawrey |

Barbara Sawrey became associate vice chancellor for undergraduate education July 1. Sawrey has been a member of the department of chemistry and biochemistry since 1984. She will serve as a senior advisor to the senior vice chancellor for academic affairs on undergraduate education matters. More

| Dean Peter Cowhey |
|
Dean Peter Cowhey has been appointed as associate vice chancellor for international affairs, effective Jan. 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008. This new position, created in response to recommendations of the International Strategy Work Group and following broad consultation with the Academic Senate and campus administrators, will provide leadership in campuswide strategic planning and the articulation of a long-term vision and plan in support of the continuing development and enhancement of UCSD's international mission. | Lynn C. Anderson |
|
Lynn C. Anderson has been appointed as dean of international education and director of the UCSD International Center, effective Jan. 22. Anderson will succeed Mary Dhooge, who is retiring after 33 years of service to the campus. Anderson is currently associate director of the Learning Abroad Center and director of Curriculum Integration at the University of Minnesota with primary responsibility for supporting internationalization of the campus and integrating study abroad into all majors.
