How to Get Your Holiday Shopping Done During Your Lunch Break
December 3, 2007
Once again, the UCSD campus will be turning into a shopper’s heaven for those of us who aren’t too fond of shopping at the mall. Sales are the name of the game on campus this year if you haven’t yet done your holiday shopping. So you won’t be missing out on great deals if you’re not heading out to town.
The UCSD Bookstore is running a seven-day sale, Dec. 3 to 9, offering up to 50 percent off on toys, gifts and holiday items. The store also will offer 20 percent off general and technical books. There is lots to choose from for everyone on your gift list, including skateboards, musical instruments, fine writing tools, lava lamps, disco balls, leather jackets, gourmet food, collectibles, games and toys. More

The Birch Aquarium’s bookshop, which has a wide selection of marine-themed gifts for children and adults, will offer a 20 percent discount on all purchases from Dec. 1 to 16. For children, collections of books and DVDs are available as well as plush stuffed animals in the shape of your little one’s favorite ocean creature ($10.95 to $35.00). Also for sale are science kits to stimulate young minds and T-shirts, sweatshirts and fleece to keep everyone warm. For adults, the bookshop offers wind chimes, field guides, tide calendars, ocean picture books, bottle stoppers, note cards, salt and pepper shakers and more. Through Dec. 21, members of the UCSD community also can get discounted aquarium tickets: $7.50 each instead of $11, when buying six or more tickets.

For those of us who prefer handmade gifts, the UCSD Crafts Center is holding a holiday sale Dec. 4 to 6 on the Revelle Campus near the old student center. Offerings include unique jewelry, ceramics and glass work. All works are made by crafts center faculty and students. More
Also, check out the homemade craft fair at this year’s Staff Association Pancake Breakfast Dec. 12 in the foyer of the Price Center Ballroom. Many crafters will be returning for a second year and selling jewelry, hand-woven baskets, greeting cards, candles, ornaments, painted art, woodwork and much, much more. More
To find gifts for the more adventurous, head to Outback Adventures. The store sells gear for surfing, hiking and body boarding, including rash guards, wetsuits and thermal underwear. Then you can book an adventure to break in all that brand-new stuff. More
Finally, for the snow lover on your list, get discount tickets for Snow Summit at the UCSD Box Office: $45 for adults or $35 for young adults. Buy them online or in person. More
