On a chilly Saturday afternoon, Judy Davis surveyed the wreckage that was once her home, high in the hills of southeast San Diego County, near Jamul. She was looking for any of her belongings that might have survived the Harris Fire last month. She and her husband were out of town when the blaze started.

Whether They are “Smarter Than a 5th Grader"
Six UC San Diego students tried to outsmart a group of fifth-graders on the national television show, "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" which aired Thursday night. The students on the episode are a part of the Pi Kappa Alpha (PIKE) fraternity. The episode featured UCSD junior Tyler Van Buren as the main contestant on the show.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States for people over age 60. The Shiley Eye Center at UCSD is participating in a study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health designed to determine if a modified combination of vitamins, minerals and fish oil can further slow vision loss from AMD. Making Winter a Little Warmer
With less than 72 hours notice, Dr. Margaret McCahill, founding director of the UCSD Combined Family Medicine-Psychiatry Residency program, and a crew of dedicated volunteers helped get the city’s winter homeless shelter up and running. On Saturday, Nov. 17, in just six hours, the team screened 225 shelter guests. Two were sent to the emergency room and all other medical issues were addressed on site.
