Events on Demand Brings Customized Calendar of Events to Your Inbox

Ioana Patringenaru | December 10, 2007

Do you want to know when Pulitzer-Prize winning writers come to town before anyone else does? How about concerts by UCSD faculty and principals at the San Diego Symphony? Or the latest cutting-edge arts exhibit?

UCSD offers a service that will allow you to do just that, from the comfort of your office or home. Events on Demand, available on the UCSD Calendar of Events Web site, allows subscribers to receive free event notifications by e-mail.

"People were telling us they wanted more information about campus events, but that they didn't always have time to keep checking the Calendar of Events," said Janet Howard, director of electronic communications in University Communications and Public Affairs. "This is a great way of bringing the Calendar of Events to them. “

Events on Demand sends the information directly to the subscriber's inbox, Howard pointed out, and it only sends information on events that match their personal interests. The notifications also will give subscribers plenty of time to make plans to attend campus events.

And there’s plenty to choose from. A survey of upcoming events yielded 17 lectures and seminars, 10 theater listings, seven music listings and six conferences. Highlights of the year 2008 include an appearance by Pulitzer-Prize-winning writer Jared Diamond, author of “Guns, Germs and Steel” on Feb. 18 and a performance by comic author and New Yorker contributor David Sedaris on June 30. Principals of the San Diego Symphony also will be performing with UCSD faculty Feb. 4.

Subscribing is easy. Just go to http://calendar.ucsd.edu and click on “UCSD Events on Demand.” Enter your name, affiliation and e-mail, and create a password. Then enter up to 20 keywords defining the events that interest you. That’s all there is to it. You will be notified via e-mail when an event matching one of your keywords is posted to the UCSD Calendar of Events.
