In March, one of the most significant research efforts in recent science history will celebrate its 50th anniversary. The record of rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere known as the Keeling Curve marks for many people the point when society became aware that human activities can cause long-term changes to climate. But the Keeling Curve only describes what happens to a portion of the carbon dioxide produced by natural and human activities. Researcher Receives
New Faculty Award for Stem Cell Research
The latest round of grants for stem cell research has been approved for funding by the 29-member Independent Citizens Oversight Committee governing board of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. The New Faculty Award to David Traver, assistant professor of biological sciences at UCSD, will fund his research into how the stem cells of the blood-forming system are generated, providing $2,803,375 over five years. Early identification of adverse effects of drugs before they are tested in humans is crucial in developing new therapeutics, as unexpected effects account for a third of all drug failures during the development process.
