A Warming Climate Can Support Glacial Ice
New Research Indicates Glacial Ice Existed
on Earth During Intense Period of Global Warming
New research challenges the generally accepted belief that substantial ice sheets could not have existed on Earth during past super-warm climate events. The study by researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego provides strong evidence that a glacial ice cap, about half the size of the modern day glacial ice sheet, existed 91 million years ago during a period of intense global warming. This study offers valuable insight into current day climate conditions and the environmental mechanisms for global sea level rise. More

Marco Murillo Named
Person to Watch by San Diego Magazine
Marco Murillo, president of the Associated Students at UCSD and a Preuss School graduate, was named by San Diego Magazine in its January issue as one of its “50 People to Watch in 2008.” In its list of “50 local notables,” the magazine cited Murillo for his accomplishments and his embrace of educational opportunity. He joined such local news makers on the list as a veteran Padres Pitcher and an author of “chick” literature. Murillo was quoted as saying, “Education is very important to me, not only to help me to achieve my goals, but also to be able to go back to my community and make a difference.”

Memorial Tribute to Honor John Stewart
A memorial tribute to John Lincoln Stewart, Provost Emeritus of John Muir College, will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Faculty Club. The public is invited. Stewart, who died Aug. 31 after a long illness, was the founding provost of Muir College and a champion of preserving the environment. He came to UC San Diego in 1964 and the following year was appointed Provost of Second College, soon renamed John Muir College after the famed environmentalist, nature writer and Sierra Club founder.
