Q&A with UC San Diego Project Manager Judy Lane
Pat Jacoby | January 7, 2007
Judy Lane, director of Special Events and Protocol , is chairing a large campuswide committee working on plans for the 2008 U.S. Open to be held at Torrey Pines golf course June 9 to 15. This Week@UCSD asked her to describe early plans for the event.
Q
We understand this is an enormous operations and planning event for San Diego. Could you give us a breakdown of how many people are expected to be on site for the week, and their roles?
A
A total 50,000 to 55,000 people are expected daily, including 45,500 spectators, 6,000 volunteers and 156 of the world’s best golfers.
Q
How are all those people going to get to the area, and where will they park?
A
Some 14,000 cars will be accommodated at Qualcomm Stadium, and 7,000 more in outside lots. A total 200 shuttle buses will transport the patrons from Qualcomm to the nearby Gliderport, where they will then walk to multiple admission gates for security screening.
Q
With all those buses going back and forth around the campus, will adjacent roads be closed?
A
Affected, yes, but not closed. North Torrey Pines Road will remain open through the week but traffic will be heavy from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Q
In what other ways will the campus be affected?
A
As previously announced, undergraduate commencement ceremonies are scheduled for June 21 and 22, one week later than usual, to accommodate traffic concerns. Special activities are planned for the senior students during the week after final exams and before the commencement weekend.
Individual departments are working on plans to reduce the number of persons on campus during the event, and we’ll be announcing those arrangements in the future. You can visit the campus website http://usopen.ucsd.edu/ for information.
Q
Do you have any other information that we might find interesting
or helpful to know?
A
Yes. I think it’s very important that you know that at a typical US Open 75,000 hot dogs are sold. So, let’s see if UCSD can help surpass that figure this year.
