 After enduring months on the coldest, driest and windiest continent on Earth, researchers including climate scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego have closed out the inaugural season on an unprecedented, multi-year effort to retrieve the most detailed record of greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere over the last 100,000 years. Other students advocated for peace and exhibited their art work. It was another lively week on the UCSD campus and our cameras were there to capture it all. More

 Scripps Scientist to Field Questions in Online Chat on Climate Change
Join Scripps Oceanography's Jeff Severinghaus as he fields questions about climate change from the public Feb. 8 during an online chat hosted by the San Diego Union-Tribune. Starting at noon, visitors to the Union-Tribune website will be able to submit questions to Severinghaus, a professor of geosciences in the Geosciences Research Division at Scripps. Severinghaus’ current research interests include using trapped bubbles of gases contained in ice cores to track changes in ancient climate.

"Mayan Journeys" explores how internal migration to southern Mexico's tourist resorts serves as a springboard for international migration and how the new migrants navigate enhanced obstacles at the US-Mexico border and enter the U.S. labor force. Drawing on an extensive 2006 survey of migrants and potential migrants in Tunkás, Yucatán, and its satellite communities in Southern California, the authors provide evidence of the failure of US border enforcement to deter undocumented migration from Mexico. Last week was Spirit Week at UCSD and the whole campus got into the act. Administrators and staff members especially joined in the fun, decorating their offices, dressing up in blue and gold UCSD gear and making up poems and cheers. Thirty departments throughout campus took part in the first-ever Spirit Week office decorating contest. The office of Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Penny Rue took the top prize.
