International Center Looking for English-Language Tutors

Lynn Anderson, UCSD's dean of International Education.
The UCSD International Center is looking for tutors for its American English in Action Program. The program is a great way to get involved at the UCSD International Center — a place full of life and the crisscrossing of cultures from around the world, said Lynn Anderson, dean of international education.
Volunteer tutors come from varied backgrounds. Some are retired professionals, others are students looking for an international experience at home, yet others are faculty are staff interested in helping others. Most have never had any extended training for experience working with English-language learners. But all are confident in their own ability to speak grammatically correct English that can be easily understood by someone from abroad, Anderson said.
Prospective tutors attend a three-hour orientation session before getting an assignment. Tutors generally work with tutees one hour per week at a mutually agreed upon location. The orientation gives some background regarding the UCSD International Center and the tutor program, as well as information on valuable resources for new tutors.
