UCSD Chemists Find Important Contributor to Smog
Chemists at UC San Diego have discovered that a chemical reaction in the atmosphere above major cities long assumed to be unimportant in urban air pollution is in fact a significant contributor to urban ozone—the main component of smog. Their finding, detailed in the journal Science, should help air quality experts devise better strategies to reduce ozone for the more than 300 counties across the United States with ozone levels that exceed new standards announced last week by the Environmental Protection Agency.  On March 12, surgeons at the UC San Diego Medical Center performed what is believed to be the country’s first removal of a diseased appendix through the mouth. Search Committee Recommends
Head of University
of Texas be Appointed Next UC President
 The committee conducting the search for the next University of California president is recommending to the Board of Regents that Mark G. Yudof, currently head of the University of Texas system, be appointed to lead the UC system, Regents Chairman and search committee Chairman Richard C. Blum announced March 20.
