One Alum’s True Life Adventure in the Global Economy
On a steamy Tuesday morning last July, I found myself in a place I never dreamed I would visit: the green room of CNN’s New York studios, waiting to go on air for a live interview. In a haze of nerves I focused on odd details. Muffin crumbs on the carpet. A cup of milk abandoned on the table beside a tower of wilting fruit. It took me a couple of minutes to notice the huge window behind me with a view of Columbus Circle and a bright green corner of Central Park. Alumnus to Show Super-High-Definition,
Hip Hop-Inspired Video at International Festival
The year 1985 was a momentous one for the arts and entertainment industry: The first Nintendo Entertainment System was released in U.S. stores, hip hop was in its early heyday, and the sci-fi flick “Back to the Future” was drawing huge crowds. It was also the year UC San Diego alumnus Mike Toillion was born. Now, at age 23, Toillion has traveled back to the future himself, remixing elements from old-school hip hop culture and new-school video games to create a state-of-the-art 4K digital video that is beginning to draw attention from across the globe. Author of Ground-breaking Book
on Scandal at Abu Ghraib Prison Coming to Campus
Four years ago, pictures showing the abuse of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq filled the airwaves and dominated the front pages of newspapers across the United States. Now, for the first time, a documentary filmmaker and a longtime staff writer for The New Yorker magazine have conducted lengthy interviews with soldiers who served at the prison and are telling their stories in a ground-breaking book. Writer Philip Gourevitch will discuss “Standard Operating Procedure,” during a talk June 3 at The Neurosciences Institute, as part of UCSD Extension’s Revelle Forum. More  |

Conrad Prebys is Music to Ears of UC San Diego
Local philanthropist Conrad Prebys is not a golfer. He doesn’t like to fish, he doesn’t want a boat and he has no interest in flying planes. Fortunately for UC San Diego, he does like music. “It’s a true passion of mine and has been a great part of my life,” said the one-time aspiring musician. Now, the San Diego builder has demonstrated his love of music by making a $3 million gift to support the renowned UC San Diego Department of Music with the establishment of the Conrad Prebys Music Endowment.
