Chancellor Marye Anne Fox thanked the council during its May 27 meeting and accepted the resolution. Fox was joined by City Council President Scott Peters, UCSD athletics department representatives, staff and alumni, including six alumni who work for the city in the city council’s chambers.
As part of UCSD Week, Fox and the campus delegation met with City of San Diego officials during a two-day program, May 27 and 28. The delegation’s goal was to educate city council representatives and staff members about the university’s positive local impact in their districts. They also aimed to remind the council of the campus’ role as an economic engine for the city and the state.
The delegation discussed how UCSD is a partner in the region’s progress as it educates a highly skilled work force; develops new technologies; creates new jobs and businesses; and partners with the city on important initiatives like CleanTech, a collaboration between the city and several other regional entities to promote the expansion, attraction and retention of businesses that develop products and technologies that provide environmentally sustainable solutions.
On May 27, Fox met briefly with Mayor Sanders and had a private meeting with the mayor’s CleanTech Initiative team to discuss the status of the city’s partnership with the university and to find ways to enhance collaboration. Fox and Vice Chancellor Gary Matthews also met with Councilman Ben Hueso to discuss how UCSD researchers could assist the city and his district.
On May 28, the campus’ delegates met with all eight San Diego City Council offices and presented them with a 2008 UCSD pennant. Council President Scott Peters, Council Members Kevin Faulconer, Toni Atkins and Tony Young said how impressed they were with the individuals representing the university.
That same day, Vice Chancellor Matthews and Vice Chancellor Art Ellis provided testimony and gave a Power Point presentation in front of the city’s Natural Resources and Culture Committee detailing the progress UCSD is making in becoming a sustainable campus both in application and in research. Committee Chair Donna Frye, Council President Peters, Councilman Faulconer and Councilwoman Atkins attended the presentation.
Delegates involved in the two-day program included Staff Advisor to the UC Regents Ed Abeyta, Board of Overseers members Richard Ybarra and Ron Baza, UCSD Extension representatives Henry DeVries and Hugo Villar, San Diego Alumni Chapter President Katherine Vargas , Chair of Reproductive Medicine Tom Moore, students Lisa Chen and Erin Brodwin, who are part of the Associated Students government, Global CONNECT representatives Peter Thomas and Nathan Owens and Sara Richardson, an undergraduate engineering student and president of Triton Engineering Student Council.
