For the third consecutive year, UC San Diego won the California Collegiate Athletic Association Commissioner’s Cup for the just-completed 2007-08 athletics season, officials announced last week.
The Commissioner’s Cup is awarded to the CCAA member institution with the highest aggregate ranking in eight of the CCAA’s 13 championship sports. The campus receives a laptop computer along with a glass trophy.
UC San Diego totaled 18.5 points to finish ahead of Chico State. The Tritons captured CCAA titles in men’s basketball, women’s tennis and women’s track and field, while finishing second in baseball, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. The campus also finished third in men’s track and field, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s cross country and women’s cross country.
Chico State led the CCAA in conference championships, claiming titles in women’s basketball, men’s cross country, women’s soccer and men’s track and field. The Wildcats also finished second in women’s track and field and women’s cross country.
Cal State San Bernardino finished third with 23.5 points and was followed by Cal State L.A., Cal Poly Pomona, Sonoma State, Humboldt State, Cal State Stanislaus, Cal State Dominguez Hills, San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay.
An institution’s Commissioner’s Cup ranking is calculated using its top two league finishes in the fall, winter and spring sports seasons, as well as the highest two remaining finishes, regardless of season. An institution’s numerical finish for team sports is determined by regular season standings. Individual sports finishes are determined by the finishes of the season-ending championship event.
Team sports are soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis, baseball and softball. Individual sports are cross country, golf and track & field. Institutions winning the conference tournament in the sports of men’s soccer, women’s soccer, softball and baseball deduct one point from their regular season finish in those respective sports.
CCAA Commissioner's Cup is presented in Association with Apple Computer.
