Bringing Out the Scientist in Students
New program aims to bring excitement of university-level research to high schools across San Diego County
This summer, graduate students and high school teachers spent hours in the lab to create original experiments that would get students excited about science. Their efforts were part of the Socrates Fellows Program, funded by a $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation.

 A blessing and a song from Kumeyaay elder Stan Rodriquez opened the Native American Day kickoff event Friday on campus, followed by a warm welcome by Chancellor Marye Anne Fox. Jobs for Opportunity to Conduct Hands-on Research
Francis Hwee bounds into the room waving a flask filled with emerald green cyanobacteria. Rather than managing an apartment building in Oakland, Hwee spent his summer trying to coax the microorganisms into making precursors of drugs that could fight malaria or cancer with the help of a scholarship from the Division of Biological Sciences.

Preuss School Junior Wins National
Prize as an Outstanding Young Hero, Leader
 Paul Tran, 16, a junior at The Preuss School, has been named one of 10 national winners of the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes, which honors “outstanding young leaders who have made a significant positive difference to people and our planet.” Tran will receive $2,500 to apply to higher education or to his service project. Linguistics Pioneer Edward Klima Dies
 Edward S. Klima, internationally recognized for his seminal contributions in linguistics and psycholinguistics, and a founder and professor emeritus in the UCSD department of linguistics, died Thursday. He was 77. More

They got to know all the businesses, organizations and associations that moved to the new Price Center East. They competed for the Golden Shoe trophy during the UnOlympics. Welcome Week events took place last week on campus, introducing students to the university.
