What’s new this academic year? This Week@UCSD has been looking at all the changes taking place on campus. Here is a short list of new appointments, transfers and promotions announced since the beginning of this year for key administrative and academic positions.
Debra G. Neuman, the former senior vice president of External Relations at CARE USA in Atlanta, has been appointed as UC San Diego’s vice chancellor of External Relations. Neuman, a nationally recognized development professional, who led CARE USA’s fundraising response to the December 2004 South Asia tsunami and similar international efforts, joined the university June 16.

Gary C. Matthews, a recognized leader in higher education management, has been appointed vice chancellor for Resource Management & Planning. Matthews has served as interim vice chancellor for Resource Management & Planning since December 2006, when former Vice Chancellor John Woods retired. More >
Dr. Sandra Daley has been named the new campus associate chancellor and chief diversity officer. “With Dr. Daley as our new Chief Diversity Officer,” said Chancellor Marye Anne Fox, “we plan to keep diversity at the forefront of all discourse surrounding the university and its goals.” Daley also was named chair of The Preuss School Board of Directors, effective July 1. Jeanne Ferrante, a professor of computer science and engineering and associate dean of the Jacobs School of Engineering was appointed as the campus' first associate vice chancellor for Faculty Equity, effective July 1. The new position was established in response to recommendations of the UCSD Workgroup on the Report of the UC President's Task Force on Faculty Diversity.

Jeffrey Elman, associate dean of the Division of Social Sciences and distinguished professor in the department of cognitive science, has been named dean of the Division of Social Sciences, effective Sept. 1. In making the announcement, Chancellor Marye Anne Fox said, "Jeff Elman's administrative and scholarly accomplishments and his vision and extraordinary leadership skills make him an outstanding choice as UCSD's next Dean of the Division of Social Sciences." Seth Lerer, one of the nation’s leading literature scholars, with particularly strong administrative and leadership experience, has been named dean of the Division of Arts and Humanities. Lerer currently holds and endowed chair in the humanities and is a professor of English and comparative literature at Stanford University. More >
Science historian Naomi Oreskes, whose work has played a critical role in establishing that there is a clear consensus about global warming among scientists, has been appointed to serve as provost of Sixth College, effective July 1. More >
Henry C. Powell, a professor of pathology and immediate past chair of the Academic Senate at UC San Diego, has been chosen for a leadership role on the University of California’s Academic Council and Academic Senate in Oakland. His two-year tenure, first as vice chair, and then chair, began Sept. 1 and lasts through 2010. More >
Edward L. Abeyta, the registrar and director of academic services at UC San Diego Extension, will serve as a staff advisor to the UC Regents next academic year, the UC Office of the President announced. "Ed brings great dedication to the university and its staff to the position of staff advisor-designate,” said Associate Vice President of Human Resources Judy Boyette. “His selection signals a wonderful addition to the program." Scott Barton was appointed principal of The Preuss School. Barton had served as the school's acting principal. The appointment by UC San Diego Chancellor Marye Anne Fox was effective June 1. More >
Armin Afsahi was named assistant vice chancellor for Alumni Affairs and executive director of the UCSD Alumni Association. Afsahi, a UC San Diego alumnus of Revelle College, is a seasoned advancement executive with more than 17 years of private and public sector experience in institutional advancement, strategic management, business development, marketing, technology and operations gained in public and private universities, as well as technology, education, and consulting firms. He is longstanding member of the UC San Diego community and a former member and officer of the UCSD Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Michael L. Norman was appointed chief scientific officer of the San Diego Supercomputer Center. Norman is a distinguished professor of physics at UC San Diego. “We are delighted to welcome Mike officially,” said Fran Berman, director of SDSC, an organized research unit of UC San Diego. More >
