The holidays are coming, but the economy is shrinking and everyone’s budgets are getting a little tighter. Stores on the UCSD campus will be offering a wide array of sales within the next two weeks for shoppers, who are trying to find the right presents for everyone on their list without spending a fortune. And since you won’t leave campus, you’ll save money on gas too.
The UCSD Bookstore is running a seven-day sale, Dec. 1 to 7, offering up to 50 percent off on toys, gifts, clothing and holiday items. The store also will offer 30 percent off cookbooks, travel books, children’s picture books, selected literature titles, bargain books and calendars. Additional discounts also will be available on selected computer store merchandise and supplies. More

The Birch Aquarium at Scripps bookshop, which features a wide selection of marine-themed gifts for children and adults, will offer a 20 percent discount on all purchases from Dec. 1 to 14. The aquarium offers an eco-friendly selection of items, including alabaster glassware, organic cotton apparel and sustainable wooden picture frames. Dress your little fishes in unique organic onesies that say, “My Dad Recycles More than your Dad,” or “My Other Ride is a Hybrid.” (sizes 3 months to 18 months at $26.95). For older children, collections of books and DVDs are available as well as plush stuffed animals in the shape of your little one’s favorite ocean creature ($10.95 to $35). Also for sale are science kits to stimulate young minds as well as T-shirts, sweatshirts and fleece to keep everyone warm. For adults, the bookshop offers wind chimes, field guides, tide calendars, ocean picture books, bottle stoppers, note cards, salt and pepper shakers and more. Can ship nationally and internationally. For more information: (858) 534-8753. Beginning Nov. 25 through Dec. 19, members of the UCSD community also can get discounted aquarium tickets: $7.50 each instead of $11, when buying six or more tickets. For more information: (858) 534-4109.
For those of us who prefer handmade gifts, the UCSD Crafts Center is holding a holiday sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 2 to 4 on the Revelle Campus near the old student center. Offerings include unique jewelry, ceramics and glass work. All works are made by crafts center faculty and students. More
Also, check out the homemade craft fair at this year’s Staff Association Pancake Breakfast Dec. 17 in the Price Center East Ballroom. Many crafters will be returning for a third year and selling jewelry, hand-woven baskets, greeting cards, candles, ornaments, painted art, and much, much more. Purchases support the UCSD Staff Association Scholarship Program. More
Happy Shopping!
