Looking Forward to 2009
The opening of a new housing complex for transfer students and of the Conrad Prebys Music Center as well as a visit by former Vice President Al Gore will highlight the 2009 year at UC San Diego. The university also will expand its research efforts in many areas, from alternative fuels to telemedicine. UC San Diego is ranked among the nation’s top 10 “Best Value” public colleges for 2009 by The Princeton Review, one of America’s most widely known education service companies.
The Review listed UC San Diego in seventh place on its annual ranking of the 50 private and 50 public “best value colleges.”

Campus Kicks Off Darwin-Lincoln Anniversary Celebration with Series of Events, Lectures
Feb. 12, 2009 marks 200 years since the births of two men whose ideas and actions helped to shape the modern world: Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln. Both men were controversial in their time—Lincoln for opposing slavery and refusing to allow southern states to secede from the union, and Darwin for challenging accepted ideas of how abundantly diverse forms of life came to inhabit the Earth. Senior to Watch: Tyler Green
Last summer, Tyler Green, who was about to start his senior year at UCSD, went on a humanitarian mission to the Amazon in Ecuador. The Orange County native, who volunteers in the emergency room at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, helped triage patients, who were waiting for doctors and nurses to see them. More

Genome Study Reveals New Clues
Regarding Mystery Childhood Illness:
UC San Diego Scientists Participate in International Kawasaki Disease Study
A study looking at the entire human genome has identified new genes that appear to be involved in making some children more susceptible to Kawasaki disease, a serious illness that often leads to coronary artery disease, according to a new international study published in PLoS Genetics. This is the first genetic study of an infectious disease to look at the whole of the genome, rather than just selected genes.

Metabolic Syndrome a Risk for Veterans with PTSD
Veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are more likely to have metabolic syndrome than veterans without PTSD, according to a study led by Pia Heppner, a psychologist with the School of Medicine and Veterans Affairs of San Diego. The study was published online in the journal BMC Medicine.

Brain-imaging research finds visual areas respond more to valuable objects
Dollar signs for eyes — cartoonists have been drawing them for years, and the artists, while whimsical, may have been onto something. According to new research from UC San Diego, areas of the brain responsible for vision respond more strongly to objects of value.

First Associate Dean for Global Health Sciences Named
In a world with constantly shrinking borders, global health is a growing concern. Russell Thackston has been appointed as assistant vice chancellor for Auxiliary and Plant Services. In this role, Thackston will provide executive leadership to a diverse group of support service departments, including Facilities Management, UCSD Bookstore, Transportation and Parking Services, Early Childhood Education Center, Campus Research Machine Shop and Imprints Copy Services.

UC Regents to Consider Plans to Trim Enrollment, Freeze Senior Management Pay
To cope with insufficient state funding for enrollment growth and continuing budget cuts, UC President Mark Yudof will ask the Board of Regents Wednesday to consider proposals to curtail undergraduate enrollment growth, freeze the salaries of top administrators and significantly restrict compensation for a large group of senior leadership.
