Growth Factor Protects
Key Brain Cells in Alzheimer’s Models
Memory loss, cognitive impairment, brain cell degeneration and cell death were prevented or reversed in several animal models after treatment with a naturally occurring protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). The study by a UC San Diego-led team shows that BDNF treatment can potentially provide long-lasting protection by slowing, or even stopping the progression of Alzheimer’s disease in animal models.

Scripps Dives into the Ocean with Google Earth
Seafloor imagery from a Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego scientist brings the oceans to life in a new version of Google Earth unveiled today. Scripps also contributed to Google Earth “Expedition Layer” with highlights from a two-and-a-half yearlong research voyage aboard Scripps’ research vessel Melville, detailing its more than 100,000 nautical miles journey during 49 research missions to study the western Pacific Ocean. Campus Names New Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Wellness
Starting next month, UC San Diego will have an assistant vice chancellor in charge of student wellness, officials announced last week. Karen Calfas, a faculty member both at UCSD and San Diego State University and an expert on health promotion, will step into the position March 23. She will oversee Student Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, the Sexual Assault Resource Center, Campus Recreation and the Wellness Center, and report to Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Penny Rue.
