A Week of Nobel Memories
UCSD researcher Roger Tsien will talk Feb. 18
on campus about receiving prestigious prize in Stockholm
The day after he received the Nobel Prize UC San Diego researcher Roger Tsien found his picture on the front page of a Swedish newspaper. The photograph showed him sitting by Princess Madeleine of Sweden. He looked like he was having a good time. Tsien kept the paper as a memento of his week in Sweden in early December, along with his Nobel medal, his diploma and several other newspaper clippings. He will share some of his experiences Feb. 18, when he will talk about his time in Sweden and give a lecture about his research at 4 p.m. at the Price Center Theater. The talk is open to students, faculty and staff members.  More

Service, Outreach Efforts
Recognized at Diversity Awards
 They mentored minority students. They helped recruit under-represented students and boost campus spirit. They made it easier for disabled members of the UC San Diego community to have access to campus. In all, 30 individuals, departments and units were recognized for their efforts to increase diversity on the UCSD campus Tuesday, during the 14th annual Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action and Diversity Awards.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Darwin
 UC San Diego celebrated Charles Darwin's 200th birthday in style with cake, music, trivia and giveaways Thursday on Library Walk. “It’s important to celebrate this birthday, because Darwin transformed the way that we think about bio-diversity in the world,” said Dean Steve Kay of the Division of Biological Sciences. New Imaging Center to Help Make
Better Diagnoses, Evaluate Drug Effectiveness
 Researchers at the Moores Cancer Center are taking advantage of a five-year, $7.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health and sophisticated imaging technologies at the newly established In Vivo Cellular and Molecular Imaging Center — one of only eight in the country — to develop new ways to detect early cancers that require treatment and monitor the effectiveness of new molecular-based cancer therapies. Einstein Robot Has 'Emotional Intelligence'
 Albert Einstein may have written his last scientific theory more than half a century ago, but he's still honing his emotional intelligence in a laboratory at UC San Diego. Scientists at the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology have equipped a robot modeled after the famed theoretical physicist with specialized software that allows it to interact with humans in a relatively natural, conversational way. Famed Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka to Discuss
History in Remedial Spin at UC San Diego Feb. 26
 Wole Soyinka, lifelong human rights activist and the first African awarded a Nobel Prize for Literature, will discuss History in Remedial Spin during a 7:30 p.m. talk Feb. 26 in the Price Center Ballroom West. The lecture, free and open to the public, is presented by Thurgood Marshall College and the Helen Edison Lecture Series. A public reception will precede the event. More |

New University Registrar Named
 UC San Diego has a new registrar, officials announced last week. William (Bill) Haid has acquired more than 30 years of experience in higher education. Among other positions, Haid has served as executive director of Enrollment and Student Success at the Colorado State University-Global Campus.
