Associate Dean Gabriele Wienhausen, left, and Dean Steve Kay, from the Division of Biological Sciences, cut a cake to celebrate Darwin’s 200th birthday Thursday on Library Walk. The celebration included a performance from the UCSD pep band, a Darwin trivia quiz and give aways.

“It’s important to celebrate this birthday, because Darwin transformed the way that we think about bio-diversity in the world,” Kay said.

Darwin’s discoveries are never more relevant than today, he added. For example, they explain the underlying mechanism that allows the HIV/AIDS virus to mutate.
