Bioscience Institutions Come Together to Launch Microlife Discovery Center for Area Students
Microbes may hold the key to many of the challenges we face today, such as renewable energy and disease eradication, yet scientists estimate that they have discovered less than 1 percent of all microbial species. Helping students delve into such uncharted scientific territory as a means of heightening their interest and motivation in science and research is the purpose of a new Microlife Discovery Center to be launched later this month. The center will use a novel approach to combine San Diego’s cutting-edge biotechnology with UCSD’s BioBridge science outreach capabilities, giving access to local teachers and students. More

Students Serve Communities Over Spring Break
UC San Diego students are finding creative ways to economize on spring break and also provide humanitarian aid during their week away from classes beginning March 21. Of the 80 students participating in an Alternative Breaks program, more than 60 will travel across the globe, working in orphanages, schools and hospitals and about 20 students will volunteer in community service projects in the United States. Beaming from ear to ear with a smile that arrives only after hard-earned accomplishment, Chris Moriates admitted he was nervous. “It was hard for me to open the envelope but amazing to finally see my future in writing!” said the newly assigned senior at the School of Medicine. On Thursday morning, Moriates and 107 of his classmates joined thousands of fellow medical students across the nation in a once-in-a-lifetime event: the simultaneous opening of the envelopes that reveal where the students will pursue their residency training program. In a salute to Charles Darwin in celebration of his 200th birthday, UCSD's Scripps Institution of Oceanography will honor British ethologist, evolutionary biologist and popular science author, Richard Dawkins April 7 with the ninth Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest. The event will be held at 7 p.m. in the Mandell Weiss Theatre of the La Jolla Playhouse. More
