UCSD staff member Shelley Marquez was recognized for her achievement in management.

Shelley Marquez, the chief administrative officer at the Center for Research in Language, the Institute for Neural Computation and the Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind, has been named the recipient of the 2009 Betsy Faught Award.

The award recognizes excellence and outstanding achievement in the management of general campus academic units, and honors the memory of Betsy Faught, a veteran department manager who managed an academic program at UCSD for more than 20 years. The award recipient is selected by a group of peers based on nominations from within the units of the Academic Affairs Division.

Marquez’s service to the campus began more than 25 years ago at UCSD’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography, where she spent more than a decade as an administrative assistant and then staff research associate, before moving to the general campus in 1995. Her first position in Academic Affairs was as business officer for both the Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies and the Latin American Studies master's program.

In 1998, Marquez was promoted to the position of business officer at the Center for Research in Language. Four years later, she added management of the Institute for Neural Computation to her portfolio, then the Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind two years after that. In addition, in 2007, Marquez took on responsibility as executive director of the Temporal Dynamics of Learning Center, an NSF-sponsored Science of Learning Center. Marquez is the only business officer on campus with management responsibility for three distinct organized research units, plus a fourth large research effort.

In addition to her regular management responsibilities, Marquez has contributed significantly to numerous campuswide efforts. In 2001, she was a member of the Academic Business Administrators committee on staff morale. She has served on a variety of ABA committees and is a leader in the ORU Business Administrators group (ORUBA). This past year, Marquez joined the Academic Affairs Business Officer Academy (BOA) committee to share her experiences and impart her wisdom upon the UCSD business officers of tomorrow. Despite her numerous commitments to UCSD, Marquez strives to maintain a work-life balance, enjoying time as a private pilot, meditation instructor and avid surfer.

Marquez will be honored by the Academic Business Administrators (ABA) at a special recognition ceremony April 16.
