When she was just 5 years old, Dr. Sopheap Ly was snatched, along with her family, from her home and taken to the Cambodian countryside, where she was forced to work as a child slave laborer. There she endured the loss of her father and her grandparents, and many other hardships. But fast-forward three decades: Ly has become a successful physician at UCSD and the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System and the mother of twin girls. More |

Physician-Scientists Receive
$1.4 Million in Burroughs-Wellcome Award Funding
Two of this year’s five awardees chosen to receive the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Awards for Medical Scientists are School of Medicine physician-scientists. Dr. Pradipta Ghosh was recognized for research into the changes in the activity of a protein that helps transmit molecular signals into cells, called the G protein, during cancerous tumor formation and growth. Dr. Quyen T. Nguyen was honored for testing the use of molecular fluorescence imaging to guide surgery. More |
