UCSD physician strives to realize her dreams after
a childhood in Cambodia’s Killing Fields

When she was just 5 years old, Dr. Sopheap Ly was snatched, along with her family, from her home and taken to the Cambodian countryside, where she was forced to work as a child slave laborer. There she endured the loss of her father and her grandparents, and many other hardships. But fast-forward three decades: Ly has become a successful physician at UCSD and the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System and the mother of twin girls. More arrow

Physician-Scientists Receive
$1.4 Million in Burroughs-Wellcome Award Funding

Photo of Pradipta Ghosh and Quyen NguyenTwo of this year’s five awardees chosen to receive the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Awards for Medical Scientists are School of Medicine physician-scientists. Dr. Pradipta Ghosh was recognized for research into the changes in the activity of a protein that helps transmit molecular signals into cells, called the G protein, during cancerous tumor formation and growth. Dr. Quyen T. Nguyen was honored for testing the use of molecular fluorescence imaging to guide surgery. More arrow

to Bezos Scholars Program at the Aspen Institute
