UC President Proposes Plan to Address Fiscal Crisis
University of California President Mark Yudof released details Friday of a proposed plan to offset an anticipated $813 million reduction in support from the state General Fund. The plan will be presented Wednesday to the Board of Regents, which has final authority on the matter.

Captain of UCSD Surf Team Brings Home National Title
During last year’s national college surfing contest, UC San Diego senior Marty Weinstein had delivered a near-perfect 9.75 (out of 10) score on the first of his attempts in the semifinal heat when he fell hard in the finals, severely tearing his ankle. Last month, Weinstein got his wish, demolishing the competition, winning National Scholastic Surfing Association men's college championship. More

Existing Parkinson’s Disease Drug
May Fight Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis
Existing drugs used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease could be repositioned for use in the treatment of extreme drug-resistant tuberculosis, which kills about 2 million people each year, according to a study led by researchers at UC San Diego. The rise of these strains of TB throughout the world, including industrialized countries, poses a great threat to human health.

Researchers at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center are injecting a modified herpes virus into melanoma tumors, hoping to kill the cancer cells while also bolstering the body’s immune defenses against the disease.

Renowned Geophysicist George G. Shor, Jr. Dies
George G. Shor, Jr., professor emeritus of geophysics at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, died July 3, at his home in La Jolla, from complications following several strokes. He was 86 years old. Shor’s distinguished career included helping develop the nation’s consortium of research ships operated by oceanographic institutions and participating in the creation of the California Sea Grant program.
