UC President Appoints Juliann Martinez
as 2009-2011 Staff Advisor-Designate to Regents

July 13, 2009

University of California President Mark G. Yudof announced today (July 7) the selection of Juliann Martinez, Director of Gift Management at UC Berkeley, as the 2009-2011 staff advisor-designate to the UC Board of Regents.

Her appointment follows a systemwide, months-long selection process that began with a call for applications in January 2009.  Martinez joins 2008-2010 staff advisor Ed Abeyta.

The staff advisor program, which was made permanent by the Regents in January 2007, designates two staff and/or non-Senate academic employees to participate in open sessions of certain committees of the board. Staff advisors bring the voice and perspective of staff and non-Senate academic employees to board deliberations on relevant matters that come before the Regents.

“As a graduate of UC and long-time employee, along with her diverse background, I think Juliann brings to the role an informed understanding of the needs and concerns facing staff and the ability to help the university address them,” says Yudof. “We had several well-qualified candidates to consider, and I think Juliann will be an outstanding representative for all UC employees.”

“I am honored by this appointment and proud to serve the UC staff,” Martinez said. “The challenges currently facing the University of California require innovative responses. I look forward to sharing the creative ideas, needs and energy of staff with senior leadership and the Regents.”

Martinez graduated from UC Berkeley in 1987. Her career at UC began in 1988 when served as Director of Development Research at Berkeley. In 2000 she moved into her current role as Director of Gift Management. Martinez is a member of the Berkeley Staff Assembly and an instructor in Berkeley’s Financial Management Certificate Program for staff. She has also consulted with numerous San Francisco Bay Area nonprofit organizations and higher education institutions and served as a parent representative on the K-8 Evaluation Committee for the West Contra Costa Unified School District. Martinez also has a background in tax and is enrolled to practice before the IRS.
