New Students Urged to Become Part
of the Solution at Welcome Week Convocation
Internet pioneer Larry Smarr challenged the next generation of UC San Diego students to help solve the big challenges facing humanity, including global climate change. Smarr, director of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2), delivered the keynote speech to thousands of students at the fourth annual Welcome Week Convocation and Dinner Tuesday night. A record number 4,200 new freshmen and transfer students gathered together on RIMAC field to mark their formal entrance into the UC San Diego community.

Annual Summer Send-Off Picnics
The UCSD Alumni Association welcomed incoming students and their families at the annual Summer Send-Off Picnics that took place the weekend of Sept. 12-13. In its 20th year, the picnics bring together alumni and students to welcome the newest members of the university community and provide insights on life and studies at UC San Diego. The family-style, pot-luck picnics are organized by alumni chapter volunteers. More

RIMAC Opens New Addition
Add another green structure to the campus’ ever-growing list. The Sports Facilities department welcomed students to its just-completed RIMAC Annex on the first day of the quarter, touting the many green elements of the $10 million building. The colorful, multi-windowed complex includes a convenience store, the “Short Stop”; Peet’s Coffee & Tea; lounges; meeting space, and improved softball facilities. The “Home Plate Café” is under construction and will open later in the fall. More

Five UCSD Researchers Recipients of NIH Awards to Encourage High-Risk Research and Innovation
The National Institutes of Health is awarding $348 million nationwide to encourage investigators to explore bold ideas that have the potential to catapult fields forward and speed the translation of research into improved health. Five researchers from UC San Diego have been awarded grants totaling $8.5 million for their innovative research.

UC San Diego Launches “Invent the Future” Student Support Campaign
A growing number of potential UC San Diego students will need financial support to offset rising fees and the cost of living. To address this critical need for funding, San Diego community leaders Pauline Foster and Joan and Irwin Jacobs have joined forces with the university to launch "Invent the Future: The UC San Diego Student Support Campaign," a three-year, $50 million fundraising effort. Private support generated by the campus-wide campaign will help UC San Diego stay competitive in attracting outstanding graduate and undergraduate students to campus.

The furlough plan approved by the UC Regents on July 16 took effect Sept. 1, 2009. The plan is being enacted to help offset a portion of the $813 million reduction in support from the state general fund. Due to the complexities of the plan, it's important that academic and staff employees have the most up-to-date information to assist their work planning and use of personal leave.
