UCSD Ranked First in Division II,
Seventh Overall in Annual NCSA Collegiate Power Rankings

UC San Diego has once again earned a listing in the annual National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Power Rankings. Ranked on the NCSA’s list for the fifth year in a row, UCSD was the top-ranked Division II university and earned a No. 7 national ranking overall in 2009.

The NCSA's annual Collegiate Power Rankings rate colleges and universities comprehensively based on student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength and athletic prowess of the university. The institutions posted in the 2009 Power Rankings are in an elite group of less than 6% of colleges and universities across the nation.

2009 marks the seventh year of the NCSA’s rankings. UCSD first appeared on the prestigious list in 2005, coming in at No. 26 overall, and has been ranked as high as No. 4 in 2007. UC San Diego has been the top-ranked school in Division II each of the last three years and was ranked 21st overall in 2008.  

“We’re obviously very proud to be the top ranked university at the Division II level again this year, but the jump up to No. 7 overall is really significant,” UCSD Director of Athletics Earl W. Edwards said. “We strive for excellence both academically and athletically and recognition in the annual NCSA Power Rankings reaffirms that we’re accomplishing our goals.”

The Collegiate Power Rankings from the NCSA are calculated for each college/university at the NCAA Division I, II and III levels by averaging the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup ranking, the NCAA student-athlete graduation rate of each college/university, and the U.S. News & World Report ranking. The collegiate power rankings are based off of the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup rating which evaluates the strength of NCAA athletic departments, while the U.S. News & World Report rating recognizes institutions of academic excellence. The student-athlete graduation rates are based on those provided by the NCAA.

In addition to the collegiate power rankings, NCSA publishes recruiting guidelines and provides education to the nation’s top clubs, camps, and combines to high school athletic directors, coaches and families of student-athletes who are interested in competing at the next level.
