Tritons of all ages enjoyed great food, refreshment and activities at the annual BBQ and Beer Garden hosted by the UCSD Alumni Association and Triton Athletics.

What’s better than a pep band rally on the Triton Steps with barbecued hot dogs, hamburgers and photo ops with King Triton? The rally before the men’s water polo and women’s volleyball games kicked off Homecoming Weekend 2009, October 16-18, and more than 1,100 alumni, families and friends returned to campus to celebrate Triton athletics.

That evening, UCSD water polo fans cheered on the men’s team as they played the UCSB Gauchos. The day’s activities concluded with the inaugural leadership dinner for alumni. Chancellor Marye Anne Fox joined the UCSD Alumni Association Board of Directors, Steve Relyea, vice chancellor of External and Business Affairs, Sheldon Engelhorn, president, UCSD Alumni Association, former alumni leaders, and Armin Afsahi, executive director of the UCSD Alumni Association.

On Saturday, several of UCSD’s intercollegiate athletic teams hosted team-specific competitions for both alumni and students. At noon, more than 600 alumni and their families gathered for the annual BBQ and Beer Garden, hosted by the Alumni Association and Triton Athletics. Alumni of all ages enjoyed great food, refreshment and activities, including inflatable slides, human bounce balls and a surf-riding simulator at the Spanos Track and Field Stadium.

The Championship Brunch brought back members of the 1990 NCAA Championship women’s water polo team.

On Sunday, nearly 100 alumni and families attended the second annual Championship Brunch at the Faculty Club—celebrating the NCAA Championships of the 1989 and 1999 women’s soccer team, the 1990 women’s water polo team and the 2000 men’s volleyball team. Following the brunch, the Order of the Tritons, the UCSD Alumni Association’s student ambassadors, led alumni on a tour of the newest buildings on campus.

“We are pleased to continue our partnership with UCSD Athletics to offer our community a chance to return to campus, reunite with friends and enjoy this annual fun-filled fall event,” said Afsahi.

Mark your calendars for the annual UCSD Alumni Weekend, planned for June 4-6, 2010.
