Team of UCSD physicians uses skills to treat earthquake victims despite inadequate conditions
Dr. Colleen Buono had been in Haiti for a week when a 5-year-old boy arrived at the hospital where she and two other UC San Diego physicians had been tending to earthquake victims in a bare-bones emergency room. According to the relative who brought him in, he had been buried in the rubble of his home for almost eight days.

Environmental Science Students Team with Campus Forester to Better Understand Role of Trees in Global Climate Change
 It’s not every day that UC San Diego students have class outside, with the sound of chainsaws buzzing in the background. But that’s exactly what about 40 undergraduates did on a recent Friday morning. Armed with measuring tape and a bathroom scale, they measured and weighed a tree that UCSD crews were cutting down because it had become unstable. Developing a Cyberinfrastructure for
Comparative Effectiveness in Cancer Research
 Cancer research is made increasingly difficult by vast amounts of relevant data, which are only increasing as scientists discover new drugs and interventions. Now, researchers from Calit2 and School of Medicine have been awarded $2.6 million over two years from the National Cancer Institute to prototype a cyberinfrastructure that would allow scientists to collect and interpret data from a variety of sources to compare the effectiveness of preventative measures, drugs, treatments and interventions. UC Proposes Use of Sick Leave for Baby Bonding
Parents would be able to take paid leave for baby bonding under a newly proposed policy now available for employee comment. Responding to employee interest, UC Human Resources has proposed allowing employees, including birth parents, adoptive parents and foster parents, to use up to 30 days of accrued sick leave for baby bonding.

From Settler to Citizen

Colonial New Mexico in the late 18th and early 19th centuries was a culturally vibrant region, where currents from the Spanish settlers and Pueblo Indian population dynamically interacted. This history examines how the changes in the Spanish empire affected local populations in this period, particularly by arming the Spanish settlers with tools to exploit and take command of indigenous textile and pottery trades.
