Building your career is a whole lot like going to Disneyland. There’s lots of waiting in line and lots of ups and downs once you get on a ride. But you’ve got to make sure you get to the best attractions. Only then will you have a truly magical experience. That was the metaphor that Linda Morris Williams, the associate chancellor at UC Berkeley, used to deliver career advice as the keynote speaker March 22 during UC San Diego’s Second Annual Women’s Conference. Diverse Activities at UCSD Commemorate
Life and Achievements of César Chávez
The legacy of César E. Chávez, a labor leader and champion of human rights, will be observed on campus with a monthlong series of diverse activities during April. Chávez, a principal figure in the Chicano Civil Rights Movement who defended working families and advocated for nonviolent solutions, will be recognized with lectures, a roundtable discussion, cultural celebrations, a youth essay contest, a student field trip to Chicano Park and an artistic collaboration with the original muralists who founded the park. Sleep Deprivation Influences
Drug Use in Teens’ Social Networks
Recent studies have shown that behaviors such as happiness, obesity, smoking and altruism are “contagious” within adult social networks. In other words, your behavior not only influences your friends, but also their friends and so on. Researchers at UC San Diego and Harvard University have taken this a step farther and found that the spread of one behavior in social networks—in this case, poor sleep patterns—influences the spread of another behavior, adolescent drug use. Gatsby Charitable Foundation Awards $4 Million to Salk-UC San Diego Consortium to Study Brain Circuitry
A new consortium of four research teams from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and the UC San Diego has been selected by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, based in the United Kingdom, to receive a $4 million grant over five years to study neuronal circuits underlying higher brain function. Colonies of Bacteria Fight
for Resources with Lethal Protein
Rival colonies of bacteria can produce a lethal chemical that keeps competitors at bay, scientists at UC San Diego, University of Texas and Tel Aviv University report this week. By halting the growth of nearby colonies and even killing some of the cells, groups of bacteria preserve scarce resources for themselves, even when the encroaching colony is closely related. More

Visual Arts Department Hosts Open Studios
On April 10, the community can take a long look and at the graduate programs in the visual arts department. Visitors will be able to view approximately 50 open studios, a group exhibit, film and video screenings, live performances and a symposium all in one day. More

'Biotech Demystified' Program
Offers Science Basics for Industry Leaders
UC San Diego will present its seventh offering of "Biotech Demystified" June 7-9. This innovative program helps executives and decision makers gain a practical understanding of the basic science powering the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. The program is offered through the Rady School of Management Center for Executive Development in collaboration with the Division of Biological Sciences and the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
