Leads to Pulitzer Prize Recognition
Literature professor Rae Armantrout takes award for “Versed”
Rae Armantrout wrote her first poem in kindergarten. It was about a little fish that swam around and around—and then swam away.The verses were a school assignment, but Armantrout was hooked. She has been writing poetry ever since. Last week—after publishing 10 books of poetry and teaching for almost three decades at UC San Diego—Armantrout was recognized with a Pulitzer Prize for “Versed,” her latest collection of poems and perhaps her most personal work to date. Campus Announces Admissions Data for Fall 2010
Freshmen admits up 3.7 percent; underrepresented students up 6.9 percent from fall 2009
 UC San Diego received a record total of 48,073 freshmen applications for fall 2010. Of that number, 18,334 were admitted. That represents a 3.7 percent increase from fall 2009 and winter 2010. UCSD admitted 3,041, or 16.6 percent, underrepresented students for fall, up 6.9 percent from fall 2009 and winter 2010. More

of Life as a Triton During Admit Day
More than 12,000 students and family members got a preview of what it is like to be a Triton on Admit Day April 10. The recently admitted students explored the campus with their families, met with academic department representatives, attended college information sessions and were entertained by UC San Diego's pep band, the Beat, the hip hop club and other performers at the Price Center. $14 Million Grant to Fund Construction of Centralized Sanitation Facility for Biomedical Equipment
The National Center for Research Resources, part of the National Institutes of Health, has awarded UC San Diego a $14.2 million grant to build a centralized sanitation facility for biomedical equipment on campus — a more modern, energy-efficient facility expected to save millions of gallons of water and more than half a million kilowatts of electricity per year. Can the Newest Form of Carbon
Be Made to Bend, Twist and Roll?
 Can graphene—a newly discovered form of pure carbon that may one day replace the silicon in computers, televisions, mobile phones and other common electronic devices—be made to bend, twist and roll? Physicists at UC San Diego and Boston University think so. In a paper published in the journal Physical Review B, the scientists say the propensity of graphene—a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice— to stick to itself and form carbon “nanoscrolls” could be controlled electrostatically to form a myriad of new devices. Seth Lerer Wins 2010
Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism
 “Children’s Literature: A Reader’s History from Aesop to Harry Potter” by UC San Diego faculty member Seth Lerer, published by the University of Chicago Press, is the winner of the 2010 Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism in Memory of Newton Arvin. The $30,000 award—the largest annual cash prize in English-language literary criticism—is administered for the Capote Estate by the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. More

Biologist Receives 2010 World Ecology Award
 David Western, an adjunct professor of biology and founding executive director of African Conservation Centre in Kenya, will receive the 2010 World Ecology Award. The award is given annually by the Whitney R. Harris World Ecology Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis “to an eminent individual who has raised public awareness about global ecology and made significant contributions to environmental protection and biodiversity conservation.” More
