High
Note at Country Music Awards
A group of UC San Diego students stood on an empty stage at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas during a dress rehearsal. They looked out at a sea of empty seats. That's when it finally sunk in: they were going to perform with hit country singer Taylor Swift during the Academy of Country Music Awards. The seats would then all be filled, many of them with well-known country music stars. The Tritones, a campus a cappella group, were Swift’s back-up singers during the awards ceremony April 18.  More

 UC San Diego and the National Geographic Society have signed a research collaboration agreement to create the UCSD-NGS Engineers for Exploration program — paving the way for graduate and undergraduate students on the campus to develop technology solutions for National Geographic explorers and expeditions. Study Says Fossil-Fuel Subsidies Hurting Global Environment, Security and Financial Health
 A comprehensive assessment of global fossil-fuel subsidies has found that governments are spending $500 billion annually on policies that undermine energy security and worsen the environment. The study, titled “The Politics of Fossil-Fuel Subsidies” by David Victor, a professor of political science with the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, was one of five released April 22 by the Global Subsidies Initiative of the International Institute for Sustainable Development. $200,000 in Federal Training Funds
Available for White Collar Career Transitions
To combat persistent unemployment and speed the local recovery, the San Diego Workforce Partnership awarded funds to UC San Diego Extension to provide no-cost training to Workforce Investment Act eligible white collar individuals. The training offered will prepare displaced professionals and paraprofessionals who need job transition and lifetime career management skills. More |

New Microsurgical Practice Lab
at Shiley Eye Center Pays Tribute to Alumnus
 Dr. Lamont Ericson completed his ophthalmology residency at UC San Diego Shiley Eye Center in 1996 and went on to establish a successful ophthalmology practice in Utah. Yet, Ericson’s impact reaches far beyond his professional accomplishments. His classmates, professors, colleagues, patients and the numerous students he mentored remember Ericson who died in 2007 of pancreatic cancer — for his sharp intellect, kind heart and skilled hands. Now, Ericson’s name will live on in perpetuity at the Shiley Eye Center. More
