May 10, 2010

Tim Lee, a UC San Diego alumnus and biologist turned comedian, will be the keynote speaker at this year's PhD career conferece on the UCSD campus.

Are you a Ph.D. student wondering what you’ll do once you graduate? Are you hesitating between a future in academia or in industry? Unsure of your prospects in this economy? UC San Diego’s second annual Ph.D. Career Conference has the answers for you—and will provide them for free.

Whether you’re a first-year or eighth-year student, the event promises to share the secrets to career success; talk about why it’s essential to prepare early on in your doctoral career; and the true breadth of career options available to Ph.D.s.

The conference’s keynote speaker is a case in point. Tim Lee wasn’t supposed to be a comedian. A biologist by training, he graduated magna cum laude from UC San Diego. He went on to complete his doctorate at UC Davis. He spent years developing simulation and analytical models of population dynamics before he discovered that this bored him to tears, according to his biography. He found his true calling when he tried comedy for the first time. Lee has become an underground sensation with over three million views for his YouTube videos. He calls himself “the PowerPoint comedian.”

In addition to Lee’s comedy routine and comic relief, the conference will include a series of panels on various topics:

•            Careers Beyond Academia for Humanities & Social Science Ph.D.s
•            So You Want to Be a Professor!
•            Careers Beyond Academia in the Sciences and Engineering
•            Making the Most of Your Postdoc!
•            International Ph.D. Students Transition to Industry
•            Personal Branding: Online Networking Tips for Ph.D. Students
