Volunteer50: Chancellor’s Call to Service Launch a Success at Staff Picnic

Kim Wenrick | August 25, 2010

Padres game

Hundreds of UC San Diego employees stopped by the Volunteer50 table during the August 20 All Staff Picnic to sign up for the new university service program and collect Volunteer50 bracelets, buttons and bookmarks, as well as to preview the new Volunteer50 website. In addition, staffers offered their comments about community service on camera. Look for their profiles on the Volunteer50 website soon.

Volunteer50 is a key initiative in the university’s 50th Anniversary celebration. The entire campus community, including all students, faculty, staff, alumni and university friends, is encouraged to perform at least 50 hours of volunteer service during the 2010-2011 academic year; service performed in August also counts toward your total. Our goal is to reach 50,000 hours of cumulative service as fast as we can and then set higher goals to further serve our local, national and global communities.

The first official Volunteer50 event will take place during the new student “Meet the Beach” event on September 25 at Scripps Pier. A beach cleanup will be led by Chancellor Marye Anne Fox from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.

You are welcome to perform your service anywhere you choose, whether it’s an organization you’ve been a part of for a long time or a new passion you’ve just discovered. There will also be a featured theme each month — such as education, the arts, social justice and the environment — as well as partner agencies that will provide service ideas. Visit www.50th.ucsd.edu and click on “Volunteer50” to register for the program, search for volunteer opportunities, log your service hours, and track the cumulative hours of your friends and colleagues. Volunteers who log the most hours will receive special recognition.

Let’s show our county how much UC San Diego cares. By volunteering you will give back to the community that has supported this university over the last five decades.
