From walking on the Great Wall in China to tasting street food in Malaysia, UC San Diego students are fanning across the world this summer to conduct research, take classes and discover new cultures. We asked three of them to write about their experiences. These are their stories.

Encountering a Different Lifestyle and Exotic Foods

After seven weeks in Penang, I have had fascinating experiences. I’ve shared so many conversations, met so many people and greedily ate so many delicious foods. When I first arrived, I was not quite comfortable in my new surroundings, particularly the hot humid weather, the spicy, fatty food and the overwhelming amount of things to learn for my research.

Discovering a Different Culture in China

I always look forward to discussing the similarities and differences between Chinese and American societies as well as the history, politics, and culture of China.

Exploring New Zealand’s Wonders

On the first week of my arrival I knew I just had to visit the Auckland Zoo.  I’d heard a lot about it being a paradise for animals, and surely enough, all the creatures there seemed to be enjoying the attention.  Not only was admission cheap, seeing a kiwi bird for the first time was a really refreshing change from seeing the birds in San Diego.
