Students Rally for New Season of Sports
and 50th Anniversary Celebrations at Annual Triton Power Hour

Kristin Luciani | Sept. 27, 2010

A crowd of cheering freshmen and transfer students poured into RIMAC Arena on Sept. 20 to kick off the Fall 2010 athletics season with the annual Triton Power Hour pep rally.

A high-energy introduction to athletics at UC San Diego, the rally was filled with spirited competitions, prizes, performances and an appearance by King Triton. Italso offered a preview of the upcoming celebration marking the university’s milestone 50th Anniversary, with events throughout the year to commemorate the campus’ unique history and extraordinary achievements.

Chancellor Marye Anne Fox welcomed the class of 2014 with a signature cheer, “UCSD fight fight fight!  How does it feel to be a Triton?”

Expressing her excitement for this particular class of students, who will begin their undergraduate experience as UC San Diego kicks off its 50th Anniversary celebration, Fox personally encouraged each student to get involved.

With the launch of Volunteer50: The Chancellor’s Call to Service and a myriad of celebratory events, this year offers special opportunities to give back to the community and get involved with the campus, she said.

Sporting a UC San Diego basketball jersey, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Penny Rue took the stage to share with the audience some of the outstanding rankings and accomplishments of Triton Athletics.  UC San Diego boasts 29 national championships and more than 1,000 NCAA All-American Athletes.  In addition, Rue highlighted the many opportunities for students to get involved with athletics, from club and intramural sports, to the dance and cheer teams to Triton Tide, UC San Diego’s official athletic spirit group.

Other highlights of the rally included a free guide for new students titled “50 Things to Do Before You Graduate from UC San Diego,” a face painting competition, performances by the UC San Diego dance team and pep  band and an introduction to the fall sports from some of the university’s top student athletes.  Prize giveaways included 50th Anniversary T-shirts, an iPod nano, portable GPS device and surfboard.

Closing the rally was special guest speaker John DeBello, a graduate of the class of 1975 who is known for his collaboration on the cult classic “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.”  Now the president and creative director of Loma Media, DeBello

reflected upon his own student experience at UC San Diego as he addressed the incoming freshmen and transfer students.

With a light-hearted and warm welcome, he focused on the friendships, good times and lifelong memories that would shape their college experience.  Ending on a humorous note, DeBello added: “You all have gotten more free stuff in the last 30 minutes than I did in my entire four years at UC San Diego.  You’re off to a really good start.”

Afterward, students had the opportunity to learn more about the wide variety of campus resources available at UC San Diego during the Student Services Fair on Ridge Walk.  Representatives from academic majors, recreation clubs, athletics and several central service departments greeted the students with giveaways, games and campus information. Chancellor Fox was also there to meet new students and encourage participation in Volunteer50.
