Cheering fans filled PETCO Park Sunday, Sept. 26 as the Padres took on the Cincinnati Reds—but not all of the cheering was for the players. Thousands of alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends of UC San Diego shouted for their chancellor as she walked onto the field to deliver the opening pitch and kick off the ballgame.
Weeks of practicing her curveball with husband Dr. James Whitesell in the front yard of their La Jolla home clearly paid off: Chancellor Marye Anne Fox threw her legendary 0 and 2 pitch to the Padres Friar, eliciting a round of yells and cheers from the UC San Diego crowd. Her ERA, still at 0, remains on top for university leaders in San Diego.
It was a terrific day for the university, which was there to celebrate with the community its 50th Anniversary. A special on-field presentation highlighted the unique history, extraordinary achievements and visionary leaders that have transformed the university into a world-class institution of higher education. Since its founding in 1960, UCSD has become a leader in research, education and innovation with a positive impact on the local community—and the world.
UCSD Day at the Padres, hosted by the UCSD Alumni Association, is just one of a series of events taking place from September 2010 to June 2011.
