Chancellor's Medals Awarded to
Community Leaders in Celebration of 50th Anniversary
In celebration of its 50th anniversary, UC San Diego will bestow Chancellor's Medals on two individuals and three couples—the most at one time in the university's history—to recognize outstanding support and service to UCSD. Honorees are Pauline Foster, Audrey Geisel, Irwin and Joan Jacobs, Jerome and Miriam Katzin, and Ernest and Evelyn Rady. The Chancellor's Medal award recipients will be honored as part of the university's Celebrate50 dinner on Nov. 13. More

Helping Kids Eat Healthy? There's an App for That
Want to know if you, and your children, are eating the right amount of calories, and the right kind of foods, for breakfast, lunch or dinner? There's an app for that. It's called "Food Buster" and it was developed by Aaron Coleman and Jesica Oratowski-Coleman, a married couple who both work at Calit2 on the UC San Diego campus. The app won a prize in the Apps for Healthy Kids Challenge, sponsored by first lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign. Scripps Researchers, UCSD Chemists to Create
Center Devoted to Chemistry's Influence on Climate
Scientists in the department of chemistry and biochemistry and Scripps Institution of Oceanography have won a grant to study prevailing mysteries about how chemistry influences climate and atmospheric processes.The $1.5 million National Science Foundation award forms the Center for Aerosol Impacts on Climate and the Environment, which aims to determine how the chemical composition of aerosol particles and the chemical reactions occurring at their surface impact Earth's climate. Campus Helps Soaring Number
of Community Members Suffering from Hunger
As a result of the difficult economic climate, hunger is at an all time high in San Diego. At UC San Diego, students, staff and faculty are doing their part to help feed the community by participating in the Colleges Rock Hunger contest Oct. 6 to 22, hosted by the San Diego Food Bank. The nonprofit agency handed out 15.3 million pounds of food this past fiscal year, a 56 percent increase from the 9.1 million pounds two years earlier. According to the Center on Hunger and Poverty, today over five million Californians are hungry or live in fear of hunger. More

Robertson Foundation for Government
Pledges $450,000 to Fund UC San Diego Graduate Students Committed to Federal Government Careers
Three UC San Diego graduate students will receive full financial support from a private foundation to prepare for careers with the federal government. The new Robertson Fellows Program, which begins with the current 2010-11 academic year, is being funded by the Robertson Foundation for Government, which has pledged $450,000 over the next four years. The program will cover expenses for outstanding students to complete their master's degrees at UCSD's School of International Relations and Pacific Studies. More
