UC San Diego Receives Two
Major Biomedical Informatics Grants
Researchers at the School of Medicine have received two federal grants totaling more than $25 million to develop new ways to gather, analyze and share vast, ever-increasing amounts of biomedical information. The first grant for $16.7 million over five years will create a national center for biomedical computing called iDASH. More

The “College Sustainability Report Card 2011” has awarded UC San Diego and 51 other colleges and universities in the United States and Canada “A” grades for their sustainable campus operations and endowment practices. UCSD's A- grade by the independent Sustainable Endowments Institute was based on sustainability performance in campus operations, dining services, endowment investment practices, and student activities. Researchers Find a 'Liberal Gene'
Liberals may owe their political outlook partly to their genetic makeup, according to new research from UC San Diego and Harvard University. Ideology is affected not just by social factors, but also by a dopamine receptor gene called DRD4. The study's authors say this is the first research to identify a specific gene that predisposes people to certain political views. More

Survey: Green Jobs Offer Great Salaries and Promotion Potential
Forty-three percent of sustainability professionals make $75,000 or more per year, according to a survey conducted by UC San Diego Extension in collaboration with Sustainability: The Journal of Record. The majority of respondents (62 percent) said that their job does have promotion potential, and most would recommend sustainability as a career to their children. More |

Factor Boosting Leukemia's Aggressivenes
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells survive and thrive not just by their own innate wiles, but by also acquiring aid and support from host cells in their surrounding environment. In a paper published in The Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences, an international team of researchers led by cancer specialists at the School of Medicine and the Moores UCSD Cancer Center identify a particular relationship that can promote notably aggressive leukemias and lymphomas.
