City of San Diego Recognizes UC San Diego's 50th Anniversary with Proclamation

Christine Clark | Nov. 15, 2010

Mayor Jerry Sanders presents a proclamation of UCSD's 50th Anniversary Celebration to Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and King Triton.

Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and King Triton, accompanied by UC San Diego students and staff gathered at City Hall Tuesday to celebrate the City of San Diego’s proclamation of UC San Diego’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and Councilmember Sherri Lightner presented the proclamation to Chancellor Fox who stood alongside King Triton at the Nov. 9 City Council meeting.

“I don’t know of another university that has achieved so much in such a short period of time,” Sanders said.

Lightner went on to read the city’s proclamation to UC San Diego. “UC San Diego is consistently recognized among the best institutions of higher learning and is ranked first in the nation by Washington Monthly when incorporating economic and societal benefits.”

Members of UC San Diego’s baseball team, Order of the Tritons, Associated Students, the women’s waterpolo team and other audience members sat and applauded as UC San Diego was recognized for its accomplishments over the past five decades.

“The local impact of UC San Diego extends beyond campus boundaries, with hundreds of local and regional enterprises founded by faculty and alumni in industries,” Lightner said.

Fox said she was delighted to be honored by the council. “Our partnership with the City of San Diego has been critical, dating back to our founding,” she said.  “We look forward to our continued collaboration as we begin a new chapter in all the amazing accomplishments that will come.”

Fox also recognized the members of UC San Diego’s baseball team sitting in the audience. “I want to take this time to congratulate the possible winners of the next college world series who are here,” she said. “Sometimes our scientific achievements overshadow our other wonderful programs and activities and our amazing athletes.”

Senior Kyle Saul said he was thrilled the Chancellor took the time to recognize his team in front of the mayor and entire City Council. “It’s an exciting year to be a student at UC San Diego,” the outfielder said. “I came today because I figured what better way to show my support for the Chancellor and the university than to be a part of this momentous occasion.”
