'Stellar Scholar' Chosen as New Vice Chancellor for Research

Paul K. Mueller | Dec. 6, 2010

Sandra A. Brown, professor of psychology and psychiatry, has been named the new vice chancellor of research for UC San Diego.

Sandra A. Brown, a member of the UC San Diego faculty since 1984, has been named the new vice chancellor for research at the university, effective Dec. 8, Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and acting Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Suresh Subramani announced Monday.

She succeeds Arthur B. Ellis, who took the position of Provost at the City University of Hong Kong in September.

Brown is a professor in the department of psychology and holds an additional in-residence professor appointment in the department of psychiatry. She also currently serves as chief of psychology services at the VA San Diego Health Services System, where she has directed the development of clinical, education, and research activities for more than 17 years.

“I look forward to the opportunities and challenges inherent in the Office of Research Affairs at UC San Diego,” said Brown. “The importance of interdisciplinary research has never been more apparent. As a campus, we will have to work very hard to maintain the level of success we’ve experienced in the last several years, but we’ve got the best possible faculty, postdoctoral scholars, staff and students to do so.”

Brown received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Wayne State University and is a stellar scholar in the area of alcohol and drug abuse across the lifespan.  She has earned national and international recognition for her research and is regarded as a leading expert in her field, as is reflected in her outstanding rate of publication in refereed journals, her impressive and prolonged success in procuring extramural funding, and her high citation rate.

In addition to her service on important university committees, Brown has held numerous national leadership positions related to etiology, prevention and treatment of alcohol and other substance problems.  Her international efforts have focused on bringing science to the understanding and treatment addictive disorders.  “In addition to her distinguished academic background, Brown will bring to her new role broad experience in academic leadership and a demonstrated commitment to equity and diversity,” according to the all-campus announcement.

As vice chancellor for research, Brown will have responsibility for fostering the continued research preeminence of UC San Diego, with oversight of the university’s extensive research enterprise, including research administration, intellectual property management, contract and grant Administration, and federal and state research relations.  She will develop the infrastructure and policy to further enhance research on the campus, foster interactions with federal, state, and private agencies and work with industry to promote campus research programs and create new opportunities for enhancing research activities and research funding on campus.

She will be responsible for promoting research ethics and for the oversight of compliance with federal and state guidelines for research. She will also work to advance a variety of research partnerships, including initiatives with the international community, which will enhance UC San Diego's global competitiveness as a preferred partner in research and education.
