In its January 2011 issue, San Diego Magazine announced its annual list of “50 People to Watch,” ranking UC San Diego Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and Martin Wollesen, artistic director of UC San Diego ArtPower,! among the city’s top “movers and shakers.”

As the campus celebrates its 50th Anniversary, the magazine reports that Chancellor Fox has “continued to put the university at the forefront of academic news. Besides raising more than $1 billion for the school and establishing research and partnership ventures, she’s expanded private-sector partnerships, lowered barriers to technology transfer and increased opportunities to create a diverse student body.”

Fox is spearheading actions to enhance the campus climate and diversity at UC San Diego, yielding significant results: UC San Diego welcomed a record number of underrepresented new students, up a significant 23 percent for both freshmen and transfer students. Fox established the Council on Climate, Equity and Inclusion at UC San Diego and under her leadership, 12 faculty positions were opened to advance diversity.

Recently, President Barack Obama honored the Chancellor as one of 10 eminent researchers to receive the National Medal of Science, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on scientists, engineers and inventors. Her research in organic chemistry has translated into practical use in solar energy conversion, environmental remediation and material science.

Martin Wollesen was selected as one of San Diego’s most notable individuals for his innovative work with the acclaimed ArtPower! program at UC San Diego, which builds creative experiences in music, dance, film, exhibition and food for the campus and local community. Upcoming performances include shows as diverse as the Wonderland International Contemporary Dance Festival, jazz pianist Vijay Iyer and best-selling author David Sedaris.

Under Wollesen’s leadership, The Loft—a unique performing and visual arts venue with the Zanzibar Café—was opened at the heart of campus. The space is the only one of its kind at a university in the country, and is open to the campus and local communities.

“San Diego is actually a pretty creative place,” Wollesen told San Diego Magazine—a statement that is particularly true thanks to Wollesen’s artistic impact at UC San Diego.

As the university celebrates its achievements over the last five decades, Fox and Wollesen’s sights are set firmly on the next half century, making them worthy of San Diego Magazine’s “watchful” eye. To read “50 People to Watch” feature in its entirety, please click here.
